"The Appenberg has always brought people together"

Barbara Agoba chairs the Board of Directors of Appenberg AG, a role she associates with both great responsibility and great joy. In this interview, Mobiliar’s Head of Human Resources explains why Appenberg is close to her heart and how it will continue to bring people together.

Barbara, you are the chair of the board of directors at Appenberg. What does this position mean to you?

Barbara Agoba: It involves a great deal of dedication, passion, and joy—after all, I get to do so much of what I do in a wonderful place. At the same time, the position comes with a lot of responsibility, but it also offers room for creativity.

What has excited you about the new Appenberg project from the very beginning?

The Appenberg is a matter close to my heart. It is a place of power, a place that brings people together, fosters shared learning, and ensures Switzerland’s future viability in the context of innovation. The Appenberg makes it possible to develop and nurture culture and give it a distinct identity. With its various buildings and village-like character, it also symbolizes diversity.

What is your philosophy behind the renovation of the Appenberg? What is important to you in this process?

Preserving the charm of Appenberg. We must honor our heritage and look proudly toward the future. This means planning and building with a modern approach without losing the charm of Appenberg.

What feelings does it evoke in you to be able to lead such a historic place into a new, modern future?

I feel great joy, pride, and even a tingle in my stomach.

The Appenberg is idyllically situated in the heart of the Emmental. To what extent can this location, far removed from the hustle and bustle, foster creativity and inspiration?

Fortunately, the Appenberg is situated in an idyllic setting and not next to bars and clubs, because that’s exactly what sets it apart: The focus is on what really matters—especially on people, on oneself, on work, but also on fun and community—without distractions. In addition, the Appenberg offers incredible potential for networking, whether in the evening in the spacious wine cellar, in the cozy restaurant, or at the bar. The Appenberg has always brought people together—and will continue to do so, which I’m very much looking forward to.

The Appenberg is open to seminar participants as well as hotel and restaurant guests. To what extent can interacting and networking with other guests be a source of inspiration?

That is precisely one of Appenberg’s incredible strengths. By making use of different spaces and buildings—and especially the opportunities offered by the outdoor areas—chance encounters can take place. Many stories have had their origins at Appenberg in the past, and such stories will certainly continue to emerge in the future. Appenberg is a place that encourages and inspires people to do just that: to step outside their comfort zone and their personal space, and to come together as a community to discuss and develop new possibilities and exciting topics. Appenberg is, therefore, a great opportunity to grow and develop in many areas.

What do you find most appealing about this project?
The Appenberg has grown steadily and has been developed and maintained with great dedication and passion. Guests have always been welcomed with great warmth. I am very excited that we have the opportunity to continue developing this hotel village for future guests. We are pursuing this path with pride and conviction.
